Christoffer Modig is the composer and sole member behind Askefroa. Through the project, he explores anxiety, grief, existence, and death, drawing directly from his inner life when composing the music.

Askefroa’s sound can be described through the image of a tree: its roots in death metal, the trunk shaped by black metal, and its branches and leaves reaching into post-rock and shoegaze. The lyrics are sung in a southern Swedish, East-Scanian accent, adding a distinct character that blends with the melodic structures and raw intensity of the music.

Askefroa is also a mythical creature from southern Sweden, known as the protector of the ash tree. Folklore warns against approaching an ash tree after dark. Beware.

The lyrical foundation of Askefroa is built on poetry by Swedish poet Nils Ferlin (1898–1961), whose work often revolved around pain, solitude, and death. Christoffer Modig considers it an honor to give these words new life, carried into another form of expression and another time.

Enslig, Askefroa’s debut EP, will be released on March 13, 2026.
